How to use Rick[]

Rick was long one of the worst heroes in the game, but with his new Heirloom he has received a niche but quite useful role especially in Last Stand. His Heirloom allows him to one-shot walkers in some circumstances, and while this is often too unpredictable for the Challenge, it can be extremely useful in Last Stand. As a normal shooter, Rick's traits should be rerolled to Critical Aim and Ruthless. He has Marksman and Lucky as default. Put three damage and three Critical Damage badges on him.

Rick's LT has been buffed in update 6.7. When Rick kills an enemy, his LT gets boosted, up to 5 times. This boost remains for the whole mission. This means that at LT lvl 10 Rick's damage can be boosted by 100% (20% * 5) and he is guaranteed an additional charge point on a kill. If Rick is the leader, the amount will be calculated separately for each team member, so it's possible one survivor has a multiplier of 5 while another has a multiplier of 0.

Additionally, he has the Heirloom Rick's Phone Portrait, which allows any walker attacked by Rick severeal timed to be insta-killed. For it to start working at all Rick first needs to kill a few walkers (2-4 depending on Heirloom level) to activate the Heirloom. You also need to do a bit of damage to the walker to be able to activate the "Grim Reaper" sign - this decreases with the level of the heirloom and no damage is required when at max Heirloom level. The first hit will now activate the Grim Reaper sign, and any subsequent hit can result in an insta-kill. The chance is not super high but reaches 37% at max Heirloom level (this is not boosted by lucky). A walker that can be insta-killed will be marked with a "grim reaper" icon. It remains for the duration of the turn (so it can be killed on overwatch, too), but all icons are removed at the start of the player turn.

All this means that the Heirloom is of little use in the Challenge (where you will usually finish the mission before Rick kills the required amount of walkers to activate the Heirloom), so where it really shines is Last Stand. With the right team this can be hugely effective. The best combo for Rick is with Guardian Carol in lead, together with Mercer, or Yumiko. Equip Rick with a weapon with a bonus attack and a area effect, like the Devourer or the Pulverizer. With GC in lead, this allows Rick both to get charged, and all shots he fires can be doubled. In good circumstances, this means Rick can get off seven shots in one turn (Charge attack doubled, Normal attack doubled, a Yumiko Firing Squad attack doubled and finally a overwatch attack), allowing him plently of opportunities to insta-kill any walker. Note that there is also a requirement to do some damage to a walker before it can be insta-killed, so it might be better to have Mercer in the team than Yumiko to do some initial damage (and obviously Mercer can deal huge amounts of damage himself).

As the Heirloom only works on Rick and his LT is still not super useful, Rick works best in a team member role and will be the team leader only on Star Hero weeks.

Note that there is a small bug with the Heirloom. At maximum lvl 15 the Heirloom should activate also at full strength walkers, but if using Guardian Carol in lead the "grim reaper" will not activate on a double charge attack. It will activate on a double normal attack and the charge also if the target is already damaged.
